10 Things You Didn¡¯t Know about Merino Wool

If you've heard about Merino Wool, or seen clothing made out of it and wondered what all the fuss was about, and why it's so highly rated, then this article will tell you.


1. Merino sheep are renowned as having the softest and finest wool of any sheep. Their wool is natural, and the structure of its fibre is unique, and has not managed to be recreated synthetically.


2. Merino Wool is strong. It's 8 times stronger than cotton, and 10 times stronger than silk. This makes it a good choice for garments that need to be strong or that will be worn for long periods of time.


3. Clothes made from Merino Wool are hypoallergenic. This is important as working environments can see chemical residues which can affect the skin.


4. The thermal properties of Merino Wool mean that it is excellent at removing sweat away from the skin. It can absorb up to 30% of its own weight in moisture before feeling damp. Merino Wool is warm in cool weather, and cool in warm weather. This makes it an excellent material for base layers.


5. Merino Wool is a good base layer, and so ideal for those who work outdoors or who spend a lot of time outdoors, such as those who enjoy fishing, cycling, hiking or watching sports.


6. Clothing made from Merino Wool is easy to clean, thanks to the structure of the fibres. Some Merino wool products are hand wash only which isn't convenient.


7. The dying and colouring process used to colour wool works well on Merino Wool, so that the colours last.


8. As it is a natural resource, Merino Wool is renewable. When the product is finally discarded, as it is made from natural materials it is biodegradable.


9. Clothing made from Merino Wool is created so that it won't shrink, and that it won't make the skin itchy. As Merino Wool is often used as base layers, it is important to ensure that it is comfortable. Depending on the environment you are in, it may be impossible to remove gloves and outerwear to adjust your base layers.


10. If you need fire retardant clothing, look for products that meet the EN 531 standard for protective clothing, protective clothing against industrial heat. These clothes will have undergone rigorous testing to ensure that they are suitable for those whose working environment involves heat or fire, such as fire fighters and welders.
